Trump better than Lincoln?

Dustin Bradford Smith, Staffwriter

Now I know what you’re thinking, “wait what?” but please allow me to explain.

There was recently a survey that surveyed 1,500 Americans and it showed that Republicans favored Trump over Lincoln by 6% (53% to Trump and 47% to Lincoln).

This was specifically the Republican side of the survey though. The collection of the entire survey which included democrats favored President Lincoln at 75% collectively.

Political figures have compared themselves to Abraham Lincoln many times before, but from what I’ve researched no majority of Republicans ever favored a president higher than Abraham Lincoln.

Now you might be asking yourselves, “Why do I need to know about this, and why should I care?” Well to that I say, President Trump and Abraham Lincoln have a lot more in common than most people think.

First off, and one of the most obvious similarities is, they are both Republican. They both were disrespected with political drawing and cartoons. Both of them are honest people, Trump is just more on the brutally honest side.

One thing that is undeniably similar between the two of them is that they were both extremely hated. A Lot of you might be surprised that good ol’ Honest Abe was hated, well I have news for you. The 16th President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln was one of the most hated Presidents of America during his time.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided,” Abraham Lincoln said.

When Lincoln took office the house truly was divided.

Lincoln took the office of the President of the United States on February 12, 1861. On April 12, 1861 two months after Lincoln is in office Confederate soldiers bombard Union soldiers at Fort Sumter which was the start of the American Civil War.

When the Civil War finally came to a close, just days later Lincoln would be assassinated. Lincoln is regarded as one of the greatest presidents of all time.

But during his time he would not have been regarded as that, similar to how Trump is being regarded now.

Do I believe that Donald Trump is a better president than Abraham Lincoln? Well, I believe that comparing anyone to Lincoln isn’t a fair comparison, especially if your claiming that a person is better than him.

I myself do not believe that there will be a president as important, or more important than Lincoln, so for that reason I do not believe that Trump is a better president than Lincoln.

Now you’re probably asking ourselves “why should be care about this?” And that is to say, like it or not politics are going to be apart of your lives forever, and it’s good to know about it.

A Lot of you reading this are eventually going to graduate and some of you will be old enough to vote in the 2020 election, i’m not going to tell who you should you vote for.

But what I will say is, sometimes the person that you envy today will be the same person you tell stories about tomorrow.
