Salt Lake finally has an official football team called the Salt Lake Stallions, but they’re not an NFL team.

The Stallions are part of a new professional football league called the AAF. The league’s first season started this past February. The AAF has most of its teams based in the Southern United States, the Stallions are the Northern most team in the AAF.

The players are comprised of former college players from both in state and out of state colleges. They also have some players that have played in the NFL.

One of the former NFL players playing for the Stallions is Josh Woodrum, the quarterback. He most notably played with the Baltimore Ravens in the 2017 preseason. He ended the preseason with 321 yards and 4 touchdowns.

One of the most notable players on the Stallions roster is Matt Asiata, their running back. He played with the Minnesota Vikings, and had a very notable season in 2015 where he played in all 16 games and had a total of 29 carries.

The head coach for the Stallions is Dennis Erickson, a respected college football coach. His college coaching record is 179-96-1. He also coached the Seattle Seahawks from 1995-1999 with a million dollar contract.

The Stallions play at Rice-Eccles stadium, the Same stadium where the Utes play college football.

For the players, the AAF is seen as an opportunity to get into the NFL or to get into college coaching positions. There have also been talks about NFL teams loaning their younger players to the AAF during the offseason for playing experience.

Bill Polian, cofounder of the AAF says, “the talk is ramping up” about loaning players.

Riverton High senior, Chase Budge thinks that the Salt Lake Stallions is a good idea. He says, “It would be a fun thing to do with friends.” He is looking forward to seeing a game.

Tickets for the Stallions start at around $25 and the season goes until April.
