Real Salt Lake’s 3-0 loss against the Portland Timbers on October 6th put their playoff hopes in jeopardy until an upset against the LA Galaxy kept them in their playoff seat.

RSL was clinging onto their last slot playoff spot and was prepared to hand it over to the LA Galaxy last Sunday if they won in their last match against the Houston Dynamo.

LA was favored to win until Houston caused an upset with them winning the game 3-2 and keeping RSL in their sixth place playoff seat.

RSL fans everywhere lost hope when LA was up 2-0 in the first half. Houston scored all three of their goals in the second half to give Houston the win 3-2.

RSL’s head coach Mike Petke told Sirius XM he believes that, “fate intervened”. He also said that he believes his players “deserve to be in the playoffs”.

Their first playoff game will be against LAFC who took third place in the Western conference.

Before that game happened, RSL team captain Kyle Beckerman claimed that he will be “the biggest Houston Dynamo fan there’s ever been” in hope that they would win to keep RSL in the postseason.

RSL last made the playoffs in 2016 where they also were in the sixth playoff seat. They lost against the LA Galaxy in the first round.

RSL has only won the championship once, and that was back in 2009 where they won off of penalty kicks. That game was also against the LA Galaxy.

They also occupied the last playoff seat in their conference the year they won the championship. Fans are hopeful that the team can pull off a second championship victory given their past championship.

RSL is looking to take the championship again. Their game against LAFC will be on November 1st in California.
