Make sure you leave room in your schedule for a competing debate class. Anna Thomas, Junior, started a debate club this year, and spent Monday after school 2:30 -3:30 pm  conducting debates and research times over public policy and controversial arguments. She really wanted her team to debate but in order to do that it would have to be through the school.

Riverton High school has had a debate class before. Mr. Henricksen taught that class and every year the class would get smaller and smaller until they had to do away with it because of the lack of students that were joining the class. The kids loved Mr. Henriksen, but disliked the class.

Mr. Henricksen is known for killing Debate class, but had a logical reason to do so.

He said, “There was about three kids in that class, and it was taking up a lot of money for buses, and stuff.”

Anna took it upon herself to fight to make Debate a class so that her fellow students can have an opportunity to perform.

The process can take up to 6 months to process through the district court. First, there must be a teacher for the class and there must be a syllabus.

The Jordan District Court has to make sure there is a school code for that and it exist in the district so it can easily be added to the schools Scheduling.

Vance will be the teacher for this class. It will be held in room 1070 . He will be busy with Yearbook and Silver Screen, but is excited to take upon that class as well.

Sean Christner, sophomore, has signed up for that class and said, “I am definitely excited, I’ve never really done something like this so I look forward to the overall experience next year.”

It is not definite that the class will be added to the schedule next year because there needs to be at least 20 kids in that class, but it is looking promising.
