On May 29th, don’t plan on Starbucks satisfying your morning coffee needs. 8,000 US stores will be closed, as the day is spent educating employees about racial bias.

Two black men were arrested while waiting on a friend at a Starbucks in Philadelphia. They had asked to use the restroom, after stating bluntly that it was for paying customers only, the store manager called the police.

“I kind of get saying that the bathroom is for customers, but going to that extent is just dramatic”, Kylee Peterson, a sophomore at Riverton High, tells me.

The CEO of Starbucks, Kevin Johnson, announced that over 175,000 workers will educated properly. Johnson says, “While this is not limited to Starbucks, we’re committed to being part of the solution”.

Emilee Barlow, another sophomore, comments, “I think it’s smart to have a day to talk about it and set things straight, some people just haven’t been raised right”.

Experts including former Attorney General Eric Holder will be supervising and guiding the training day. Executives from Equal Justice Initiative and Demos; Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund; and Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, plan on being there as well.

Kevin Johnson hopes that this day to retrain the employees will help prevent any further complications anytime in the future when it comes to racial bias.
