From March 26th through the 28th Kim Jong-un, dictator of the the North Korean regime, visited Beijing and had meetings with Xi Jinping, China’s President.

“It’s comforting that North Korea is becoming more social, and willing to talk,” said Tyler Butterfield, an RHS Junior.

China has been putting more U.S. proposed sanctions on North Korea because of their unsafe and fast growing nuclear program. During the meetings in Beijing, Kim put his foot forward first to discuss nuclear safety.

Kim Jong-un’s recent travels took the entire world by surprise. This was the first time Kim has been known to travel outside of North Korea since he took power in 2011.

It is also scheduled for Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in, South Korea’s President, to have a meeting this month. President Donald Trump has also agreed to meet with the North Korean leader sometime in the future.

If a meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim did occur, it would be the first time any U.S. President and North Korean leader have ever met.

Typically, most communications between North and South Korea have been at the DMZ line. This stands for Demilitarization Zone. This was created as a buffer zone between the two nations. In the past, there have been many occurrences of casualties from both sides.

President Trump tweeted that Xi Jinping had told him that his meeting with Kim went, “very well”.

“I don’t know if it’s a good idea for Trump to have a meeting with North Korea. He seems like he’s too unstable and the whole situation is too pressured in my opinion,” said a Riverton High student who wishes to remain anonymous.

A future meeting and continued communication with North Korea and its allies is a positive step forward in the progress of security and peace.
