Manipulating creative instruments is just one way Julia Gates expresses herself. While many kids are still figuring out what they like, Julia started drawing at a young age. Inspired and instructed by her dad, Julia began first drawing when she was only three years old. As she got older, her dad taught her various techniques with “watercolor pencils, markers and colored pencils.”

“A couple of years ago he have me a giant tackle box full of Prismacolor supplies and I made a goal to learn how to use all the materials in the box”, Julia said remembering her dad’s teachings.

Although she was told she was phenomenal in the second grade, she didn’t start learning her true potential until years later when she reached the ninth grade. Still, now in her senior year of high school, Julia feels she is not where she wants to be. Her attitude to always improve drives her to find various ways to think about the box.

Julia is enrolled in three AP classes pertaining to art. Out of all her classes, she personally enjoys AP Art because she enjoys completing the projects assigned to her.  According to Julia, students make 24 projects during the school year. 12 of them consist of drawing or paintings in which students can do anything they like.

“The other 12 is called our concentration. My area of concentration was myself,” Julia says.

Making the decision to focus on herself would help ease her anxiety about drawing people. Not only did it boost Julia’s confidence to draw people but it also improved her self esteem.

Among her skills in drawing and painting, her other talents include sewing, sculpting, making jewelry and singing. In addition to that, she enjoys bowling and video games.

The ability to minimize complex ideas in one picture is what makes art an expressive form for Julia. Controlling certain aspects of a drawing creates that feeling of reality. That feeling drives Julia to put her personal experiences in her artwork.
